TV services in India are available throughout the country - directly as terrestrial TV and also through Cable operators, as Satellite TV. There are more than 100 India TV Stations. Doordarshan (DD), India's National Channel, was established in 1959 as a part of All India Radio until 1976. DD consists of one national network and several regional networks. Presently, Doordarshan operates 19 channels - two All India channels, 11 Regional Languages Satellite Channels (RLSC), four State Networks (SN), an International channel and a Sports Channel. Regular satellite transmissions began in 1982 (the same year color transmission began).

Doordarshan, one of the largest broadcasting organizations in the world now in terms of the infrastructure of studios and transmitters, the variety of software and the vastness of the viewership, had a modest beginning. The experimental Telecast started in Delhi in September 1959 with a small transmitter and a makeshift studio and the regular daily transmission started in 1965. The service was extended to a second city - Bombay only in 1972. Till 1975, only seven cities were covered by Television. Television was separated from Radio in 1976 and Doordarshan came into existence. National programme was introduced in 1982 and from then onwards, there has been steady progress in Doordarshan.

On DD-1 National programmes, Regional programmes and Local Programmes are carried on time-sharing basis. Metro Entertainment channel carries Network programmes from Delhi and also Single-Metro Programmes from the four metro cities. The Regional Languages Satellite channels have two components - The Regional service for the particular state relayed by all terrestrial transmitters in the state and additional programmes in the Regional Language in prime time and non-prime time available only through cable operators. Sports Channel is exclusively devoted to the important sporting events of national and International importance.

Now more than 87 percent of population of the country can receive Doordarshan programmes through a network of nearly 1044 terrestrial transmitters. About 46 Doordarshan Studios are producing TV software. Other networks that joined the fray are Cable News Network (CNN--starting in 1990); Asia Television Network (1991); Hong Kong-based STAR network (1991); Jain Televisiov, near Bombay (1994); EL TV (1994); Hindustan Television, an affiliate of the Hindustan Times in New Delhi (1994); and Sun Television, a Tamil-language service in Madras (1994). In a communications breakthrough in July 1995, Doordarshan agreed, for a US$1.5 million annual fee and 50 percent of advertising revenue when it exceeds US$1.5 million, to allow CNN to broadcast twenty-four hours a day via the country's satellite

Unfortunately, the alignment won't produce much of a sky show. The Sun will be right in the middle of the cluster -- blinding sunlight will make it nearly impossible to see the other members of the planetary get-together.
If that sounds like discouraging news and you're thinking it might not be worth star gazing this Friday evening, wait! There could be a sky show on May 5 after all -- the annual eta Aquarid meteor shower.

Right: This fanciful picture by Duane Hilton shows an eta Aquarid meteor streaking across an aurora-filled sky. No auroral storms are predicted for May 5, but such displays are becoming more common with the approach of solar maximum.

"This week will provide one of the few good views of a meteor shower this year," says Robert Lunsford, the North American Coordinator for the International Meteor Organization. "Moonlight will spoil most of the major meteor showers in 2000, but the eta Aquarids will occur with the moon near new and out of the way."
The nominal peak of the eta Aquarids occurs near 1700 UT on May 5, but "the display will not have a sharp peak of activity .... Instead good rates will occur for a week centered on May 5."

Experts expect the eta Aquarids to produce 15 to 20 shooting stars per hour for lower-latitude observers in the northern hemisphere and up to 60 per hour in the southern hemisphere. The best times to look will be in the hours before dawn on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 4-6.

Air-India logs Rs 380 million loss in 2000-01

Air-India has recorded a loss of Rs 380.4 million for 2000-01 against a profit before tax of Rs 542.9 million for 1999-2000, as per its audited financial results for the year ended March 31, 2001. The auditors have however, pointed out that in the process of making its accounts compatible with the accounting practices prescribed by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, AI has reported increased liabilities of Rs 2.23 billion.

As a result, if Air-India had stuck to its original accounting practices, it would have posted a profit of Rs 1.85 billion for 2000-2001. The national carrier has seen an increase of 9.55 per cent in its operating revenue to Rs 48.73 billion for 2000-01, from Rs 44.48 billion for the previous year. The total revenue was up from Rs 47.18 billion to Rs 62.24 billion during the last fiscal, marking an increase of 31.93 per cent.

The payments and provisions for employees including crew allowances dropped from Rs 10.08 billion during 1999-2000 to Rs 9.67 billion during 2000-01, a fall of 4.10 per cent. The outgo on fuel and oil however, increased by a whopping 40 per cent from Rs 7.06 billion to Rs 9.88 billion. Total operating expenses increased from Rs 43.72 billion to Rs 48.69 billion. Total losses carried forward to the balance sheet have increased from Rs 8.89 billion during 1999-2000 to Rs 9.34 billion in 2000-2001. In the notes to the accounts, the auditors have said that in order to comply with the accounting standards issued by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, the liability towards retirement benefits for staff directly recruited at foreign stations has been fully provided as against one fourth of the total liability provided in 1999-2000 resulting in an additional burden of Rs 235 million.

Similarly there have been additional outgoes to the tune of Rs 693.9 million, Rs 132.2 million, Rs 316.8 million, Rs 678.8 million and Rs 172 million towards liabilities on gratuity, leave encashment for employees recruited in India, depreciation on airframe equipment, obsolescence for spare parts, current liabilities pertaining to advance from customers and calculation of productivity linked bonus to agents and payments to employees on accrual basis as against cash basis. If Air-India had accounted for the above, this year as it had last year, liabilities would have been lower by Rs 1.99 billion.

We provide CAD services for 2D drafting of plumbing layouts from preliminary design data and sketches, printed drawings, pdf or tiff files etc along with design and drafting engineering services for HVAC.

We had to design a chiller based HVAC system for a 5 storey commercial building. The building was located in USA and was spread over an area of 10,0000 sq ft. The office space at the Ground floor covered an area of 20000 sq ft. The second floor had a Lobby auditorium for 100 people and, a diagnostic center with CT scan and other testing equipment. The third floor had office spaces for acupuncture, chiropractor, meditation etc. The fourth floor had a bid 50’ swimming pool, sauna spas, snow chamber and others.

The system was designed according to the usage on each floor. The AC system in the Out patient area, plastic surgery center, dental center and eye surgery center had additional filters. We had to prepare Lighting cad drawings, Power Drawings, Power Distribution Drawings and Technology Drawings.

The output was to be sent in AutoCAD 2004 to AutoCAD 2007 version. There was no library sent by the client. We prepared our own library as per the client requirements. There were around 200 electrical drawings to be completed in a fortnight. The Tiff files sent by the clients were messy which increased the time spent on each drawing. So, to finish the project on time without compromising on quality was one of the challenges faced by our team.
